Val cruises into a life of leisure in New Zealand

Val Want is back in Wellington after a wonderful cruise for 14 days around New Zealand.

“I love cruising - it is so relaxing and I can do as much or as little as I want.

The three days from Sydney to Milford Sound wasn’t too rough and I enjoyed it.

When the ship arrived, it was right in front of Bowen Falls.

The ship cruised the sound to Thompson Sound, rounded Secretary Island which took us to Doubtful Sound around Resolution Island and exited at Dusky Sound.

The panoramic views were spectacular with huge snow- capped mountains and waterfalls. I even saw the hotel I stayed in after the Milford Track walk.

Then it was around the southern-most point to Otago Harbour, Dunedin.

As I’ve spent a lot of time in New Zealand, I didn’t do any organised tours but was happy to disembark and walk around.

I was excited as we headed to Lyttelton (Christchurch) and I spent a lovely day with my girlfriend’s family.

Three year-old Katie talks like a thrashing machine and James, who I hadn’t seen before was gorgeous, turning two after I left.

The next port was Wellington’s own namesake and it lived up to its description of windy Wellington. I walked the three kilometres into the city when we entered Hawke Bay Napier. It has only been two years since my girlfriend Margaret and I drove from Katie’s place in far north New Zealand to Wellington and back via Napier and Rotorua.

Tauranga was next and I walked into the city which was a very pleasant walk alongside the beach.

I was hoping to walk around and up Mt Manunganui, a 45 minute walk, but it was closed as there was an unstable rock which was being blasted at the back of the mountain.

We rounded the Island of Rangitoto and into the Rangitoto Channel. The city skyline was very impressive including the Auckland sky tower with 360 degree views of Auckland.

Auckland Harbour Bridge and the harbour with thousands of boats is known as the city of sails. Three out of 10 people own a boat or know someone who owns a boat.

I did the Auckland Harbour Bridge walk, climbing up to the top.

This was great, quite safe and heights don’t worry me.

The walk is done in small groups with special suits and a belt with an attachment which goes on a cable moving when I walked on the level and up and down steps.

It was a beautiful day with spectacular views, which was lucky because two days before it was raining and windy. There was a little wind but nothing I couldn’t handle.

The bridge is not nearly as high as the Sydney Harbour Bridge which I plan to do with my niece for her 40th birthday next year.

The cruise was fast coming to a close with the last port the Bay of Islands.

My friend Margaret came to the port along with daughter Susan and her kids Danielle, Christopher and Blake.

We all walked around the beach and the kids and enjoyed the playground swings which was followed by a picnic lunch on the beach. It was a beautiful day.

I was now on the last leg of my journey with two days cruising back to Sydney.

It was a welcome sight coming into Sydney Harbour with all the lights of the city and famous landmarks standing out in the darkness of the still night.

The Sun Princess passed under the Harbour Bridge at 6am and docked at Darling Harbour well on time 7am.

I had not only cruised around New Zealand, doing 3436 nautical miles, but walked around the walking track and inside the ship up and down the stairs, not catching any of the lifts.

I also did 105km walking around the track and 63km when off to shop at ports and around the ship - a total of 168km.

As well as the half hour walk I did each evening, I went to all the trivia, quizzes and won many prizes.

I caught up on sleep taking a nap in the afternoons, wrote letters and relaxed - a wonderful holiday and the way to go.
