Local children have settled into school for the new year and are preparing for the exciting adventures ahead of them.
Some schools in the region have experienced increases in enrolments, while others have remained steady.
St Mary’s Central School principal Simon Price said its numbers had increased slightly.
“We had a strong Kindy intake this year,” he said.
“(This) was a result of ... the school readiness program.
“The secondary enrolment was stable and there was a good intake into Year 7.”
“Very pleased” with the intake of students at the school, Mr Price said many parents had commented on the good reputation of the school.
“We use the ‘my school’ website effectively to do remedial work with students,” he said.
“We came up well but I’m not keen for it to be a competition between schools. That isn’t fair.
“We are using it as a way to improve our results for our students.”
In his second year as principal, Mr Price will oversee the construction of the new hall in the next few months.
“The new hall is helping us extend our curriculum and the subjects we offer,” he said.
“The Infant De Prague hall will be knocked down and the (new building) will go in its place.”
Wellington Primary School principal Darryl Thompson said Kindergarten enrollment there has been steady.
“We have four Kindy classes again this year,” he said.
“We have 72, with 16 or 17 kids in each of the four classes.
“We have been able to employ teacher’s aides for each class too.”
Overall, the school has 520 students, and Mr Thompson believes the ‘my school’ website showed a fair assessment of the Wellington area.
“It judged us fairly,” he said.
“A large per cent of families here are in that socio economic bracket.
“Wellington is benefiting from the recent money spent on education.
“We have been able to employ extra teachers.
“There are great improvements and we are already seeing the results.”
