Wellington Public School’s leaders for 2010 have officially been inaugurated following an assembly last week.
The entire school gathered on Wednesday morning to watch the presentation of badges to the new school captains, Sam Campbell and Gabrielle Eather and vice-captains Kieley Blackhall and Andrew Murray.
House captains for the year also received badges at the event.
Principal Darryl Thompson was very proud to watch his students take on such important leadership roles.
“They will be role models for the school,” he said.
“They will need to display positive examples of the qualities of leadership to the other students.
“We invited some examples of good leaders in our town, such as the mayor and Joyce Williams, so the children can learn from them and their leadership qualities.”
The captains’ new duties will give them new skills and boost their confidence, according to Mr Thompson.
“The assembly was a chance for the kids to celebrate the leaders of our school,” he said.
“They will be running assemblies and major functions for the school.
“As well, they will also be leaders for the SRC and representing the school for events such as Anzac Day.”
The school is also taking part in a new program in conjunction with the Commonwealth Government.
“It is a national partnership which improves the quality of teaching,” Mr Thompson said.
“Craig Renneberg is my mentor and will give me advice on how to improve the curriculum.
“The education revolution was the building side of the program, now we are focusing on improving teaching.”
Mr Thompson believes the program will give the students an advantage in their education.
“It will be a huge benefit,” he said.
“We have employed an extra four teachers’ aides which allows us to focus on individual strengths and support for the kids. If they need extra help with reading or writing, we have the staff there to give them extra support.”
