Wellington’s own Binjang Community Radio station was “on air” on Saturday morning broadcasting from the plaza to a very appreciative audience.
DJs Glenn Porter, Jayson O’Brien, John Tognolini and Michael White read community service announcements prior to the parade and played music from local artists as well as easy-listening selections.
Roving reporter Michael White captured some comments from members of the crowd which made the station an important part of the day.
“It was wonderful to hear the music and people singing along as they walked past the broadcast area,” said one listener.
The DJs gave an informative commentary as the large parade passed by the broadcast point.
The explanations and descriptions were well received by the listening audience.
This was the first time that there had been a broadcast of the Vintage Fair Parade.
Binjang Community Radio president Marcus Hanney said he was “very pleased” with the positive response to the broadcast from locals and visitors to town for the Vintage Fair parade.
“We gained some new members, which was very encouraging,” he said.
“Binjang Community Radio is progressing well with the ground-work necessary to commence broadcasting.
“The committee has received tremendous support from Wellington Council who has assisted with a station venue and transmission access,” he added.
“The committee has also received donations of equipment and great support from many interested people.”
