What police thought was a domestic violence incident turned out to be more than they had imagined.
At 9.45pm on January 25, police attended a residence in Zouch Street in relation to a alleged domestic violence incident.
As a result of the incident, it was asked if there were any firearms on the premises.
Following further enquires, it was established a 59-year-old man had been refused a firearms license in 1996 and police will allege he was in possession of one at the time of the search.
Police searched the home and found a .22 calibre bolt action rifle located in a wardrobe, and it was seized, they said.
The man was arrested for possession of an unregistered firearm/pistol, possession of an unauthorized firearm and not keeping firearm safely.
He will appear at Wellington Local Court for mention on Thursday.
In an unrelated matter, a 36-year-old man has been charged with an aggravated break and enter offence.
The man is a co-offender following the break in to the Rygate Park canteen facility.
The small brick building has a single door at the rear and a roller door at the front and is kept secured by way of a padlock and chain.
Inside there is a refrigerator containing an assortment of confectionary and cans of soft drinks owned by Wellington Little Athletics and Touch Associations.
About 11am on December 30, it is alleged the man attended the location with another offender who has also been previously charged with the same offence.
Police allege access was gained into the building by cutting the locked padlock with bolt cutters.
Once inside, the refrigerator was ransacked.
A witness has then disturbed the thieves and the offenders then allegedly left the building with the items from inside.
The man was arrested last Wednesday and will face Wellington Local Court on March 25.
