In a bid to raise awareness about Cancer Care West’s fundraising project, a ‘Cruisin Along’ rally has been organised.
The rally will see 36 cars and their drivers travel across NSW next month, raising money and awareness about the much-needed building along the way.
Four locals, Dave and Jenny Ryan, and John and Sue Bullock will be representing Wellington for the 2300-kilometre journey.
Treasurer for the trip is John Bullock, who said about 80 people were involved in the trip.
“John Davis from Orange has organised the whole thing,” he said.
“There will be a broad range of cars going, like a 1963 galaxy, and a mixture of other motor vehicles.”
Mr and Mrs Ryan will be travelling in their car “Rocky”.
“We have gained many local sponsors for the trip. We even have sponsorship from an Irish company,” Mrs Ryan said.
“We start at Orange, then onto Grenfell, Hillston, Broken Hill, White Cliffs and return through Bourke, Warren and Forbes, and finish up back at Orange.
“It will be fun. It’s an opportunity to travel with others affected by cancer and who are passionate about raising money.”
An auction will also be held along the way, which will raise even more money for the cause.
“Our friends have been affected by cancer,” Mrs Ryan said.
“They always talked about how important it was to have accommodation and support from other cancer patients. Everyone is touched by cancer in some way.
“We believe this is a great opportunity to share and promote our town in other regional areas and will be a great chance to build community relationships and promote the tourist attractions of our town while raising money for a good cause.”
With an entry fee of $500, $18,000 has already been raised just from those participating in the rally.
Wellington was the first community to raise the required $50,000 to have a room named after the town in the Cancer Care West building last year and since then even more has been raised.
“It has been a fantastic effort on everyone’s behalf, and we are approaching the $70,000 mark,” Mr Bullock said.
It is hoped construction of the building will start in June.
