The new school captains have “big shoes to fill” according to Wellington High School acting principal Keith Peasley.
Keiran Brien and Erin Midson were voted as captains while James Cusack and Sheridan Armstrong as vice captains.
“The previous captains were outstanding,” Mr Peasley said.
“However the new captains are different people, they bring different strengths to the job.
“The kids are very wise for choosing them; it will be a very busy year for them.”
Ironically, when James and Keiran attended the primary school in Year Six, James was school captain and Keiran was vice captain.
All four of the new leaders were shocked when they found out they had been voted in as the 2010 captains, and all say they have goals to achieve while carrying out their positions.
“I’m going to help the younger students out,” Mr Cusack said.
“I will be a good role model and take any issues that the school has to the SRC,” Mr Brien said.
“I will follow the past leaders and show I can be responsible,” Miss Midson said.
“I want to get the kids involved in school and activities to get them to like coming to school more,” Miss Armstrong said.
The voting process involved the nominated Year 11 students saying a speech about why they should be chosen as a leader, and then the school voted.
“I didn’t expect it at all,” Miss Armstrong said.
“If you don’t put any effort in you can’t achieve anything.”
With just one week and two days until they officially start Year 12, the leaders say they are anxious about their last year at school, while carrying an extra responsibility.
“We have to balance our leadership duty with school work evenly,” Miss Midson said.
