Great work done by dedicated students

03 Jul, 2009 12:23 PM
Four months of hard work has paid off for a group of local students who recently completed the TAFE Outreach Skate Park Project.

While undertaking the project, which included putting fencing up around the skate park and extending the concrete around the top of the bowl, the TAFE students have also been studying at certificate II level.

Accredited training was provided for a group of mature-aged

students in a range of pre-trade skills.

TAFE outreach co-ordinator Denise Smyth said the students benefited not only by learning skills, but also from the feeling of accomplishment of the course.

“This course has seen a partnership between Wellington TAFE, OEC and Wellington Council,” Ms Smyth said.

“An aim of this project was for local people to contribute to the needs of the Wellington community and feel a sense of ownership and pride.

“The students have worked hard for more than four months on erecting fencing around the park and extending the concrete around the top of the bowl.”

The project received support from various local identities throughout its duration.

“Mayor Anne Jones, Owen Johns and other members of Wellington Council have been supportive of this project in assisting the teacher and students with their time, expertise and resources,” Ms Smyth said.

“Support from OEC has enabled extra resources to be available for this training.

“TAFE students are receiving on-the-job training and working alongside council staff, gaining a working knowledge of what is expected in the workforce.

“Geert Woldhuis has been supportive of this project and has given an important link between training and the needs of Wellington’s youth,” Ms Smyth added.

Outreach will be running a part-time ‘work opportunities for men’ course this year and will include introductory skills in a number of trade areas as well as other work skills.

There will be an information session with a sausage sizzle on July 29 at 12pm.

For more course information phone Denise Smyth on 6883 3431 or contact Wellington TAFE.
