A special tree has been planted on the Wellington Golf Course in memory of the late Jock Leroy McWhirter.
Jock was known to have a love for golf and so dear friend Bruce James came up with the idea to plant the tree.
“The 14th hole was always Jock’s hole,” Bruce said.
“It’s where he got his hole-in-one. It will always be Jock’s hole.
“He always had a problem with hitting trees too,” Bruce laughed.
A navel orange tree was chosen, and Jock’s ashes were also buried under the plant.
“We chose an orange tree because it bears fruit in the winter,” Bruce said.
“When we pick them we will be reminded of Jock.”
A group of family and friends gathered to watch Jock’s wife and children plant the tree, after
which Mrs McWhirter thanked everyone for attending.
A plaque was also made and placed at the base of the tree.
“Thank you everyone for coming today,” Margaret said.
“We will all miss him (Jock) and he would appreciate you all being here today.”
Bruce also spent time reminiscing about his time on the green with Jock.
“Jock would play golf every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday,” Bruce said.
“He was very sick with cancer, but he never complained about it.
“He had a very good sense of humour, and he will be missed very much,” Bruce said.
