Local drivers are being warned that if they decide to drink and drive this weekend they will more likely than not be caught.
Wellington police are currently participating in a Statewide operation aimed at seeing more than 100,000 drivers breath-tested across NSW during a three-day period.
Operation Drink Drive II started at 12am yesterday and will end 11.59pm on Saturday and comes in the wake of a worsening road toll across NSW.
“Unfortunately there has been an increase in the number of road fatalities compared to this time last year and this is part of police force initiatives to try and stem that increase,” Wellington police acting senior sergeant Rod Buhr said.
“Wellington has been reasonably fortunate in that we have not experienced a fatal motor vehicle accident in our sector in quite some time. This is encouraging but we have to remain vigilant at all times.”
Locally more than 20 people have been charged with drink-driving offences since March and during the next two days residents can expect to be asked to participate in either roadside or random breath testing being conducted by both local and highway patrol police.
“There is a good chance that if you drink and drive this weekend you will get caught,” senior sergeant Buhr said.
“We are entering that time of year again where people are starting to head out to things like Christmas parties and we want to reinforce to people the need to act responsibly if they are going to a function where there will be alcohol and to have a designated driver.
“People also need to be mindful that if they have gone to a function the night before not to just assume they are right to drive.
“They need to make sure they have consumed plenty of food and have had a sufficient break between their last drink and when they decide to drive.”
