Children who use the Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) will soon have more equipment thanks to a generous donation.
A total of $4387 was received from the Wellington Lions Club after a successful chocolate fundraiser was held at the Wellington Correctional Centre.
Lions Club president John Finn was more than happy to give the cheque to PCYC manger Lisa Austin.
“The money is a profit from the chocolates we sold to the inmates at the correctional centre,” Mr Finn said.
“The money was then given to the Lions Club and we gave it to the PCYC.
“We chose the club to help the children of Wellington and we hope to improve their education.”
Miss Austin said she was extremely grateful for the support.
“I am over the moon,” she said.
“It will improve our centre here astronomically, as well as make our programs better.
“Kindergym has been very successful and we have expanded it to Mondays and Tuesdays now.”
After receiving a few donations last year, Miss Austin stressed the club was not government funded.
“There is a common misconception that the PCYC is funded by the Government,” Miss Austin said.
“It is in fact not and we rely on the community to keep the doors open.
“It is imperative to keep the centre running for the children, and we are very grateful to the community for all the donations we have received.”
This year holds a lot of excitement for the club, including new staff.
“I would personally like to thank Rae Batho, The Lions Club, Clarrie Dries and the correctional centre and Anne Jones for selling the chocolates and for choosing us.”
Miss Austin plans to purchase more kindergym equipment with the money.
