Crackdown continues

Wellington Police are continuing their pledge to reduce the impact of drugs after successfully capturing a cannabis grower.

Thanks to community members coming forward with information, Wellington Police were able to arrest a man who was growing cannabis in his home.

Pleading guilty when he faced Wellington Local Court on Wednesday, the 36-year-old man was charged with two counts of possession of a

prohibited drug, cultivating a prohibited plant and possession of a prescribed restricted substance.

Senior sergeant Nik Kosseris said a search warrant was granted and police searched the offender’s home on Tuesday morning.

“The search warrant was conducted as a result of community information supplied to Wellington Police,” he said.

“We continue to encourage and we applaud the efforts being made by the community to reduce the impact of drugs within Wellington.”

According to police facts, located in the rear yard of the residence under a carport was a single cannabis plant growing in a tub.

The female occupier was cautioned and she said she thought it was a tomato plant. The accused was also cautioned, where he said the plant was cannabis and it belonged to him.

He admitted to planting the cannabis seed, watering it and expecting the seed to turn into a cannabis plant.

A small clear container was also located at the residence, marked ‘morcain’, which is only available from a hospital.

“A short time later, the man was arrested and conveyed to the station and entered into custody,” sergeant Kosseris said.

“After pleading guilty on Wednesday, he will be sentenced when he faces court again on March 25 this year.”

This was one of many successful busts police have been conducting in recent months.
