Annual Seniors’ Week packed with activities to suit everyone

08 Mar, 2010 12:20 PM
Excitement is growing among elderly members of the community who are eagerly anticipating a busy schedule during this year’s Seniors’ Week.

The week, held annually, will kick off on March 22 with Wellington Council’s community services co-ordinator for aged and disabled Lynne Rich ensuring there is something to keep the seniors busy each day.

However, plans to take a busload of residents to Sydney to attend the free Premiers’ Concert on March 23 could be in doubt if more people don’t soon sign up for the trip.

Mrs Rich said while there had been a number of bookings, about 14 seats still needed to be filled.

“The premier puts on this concert every year for seniors across NSW and we have been given the opportunity to accept 40 free tickets from the Premiers’ department,” Mrs Rich said.

“We’ve booked the coach and the tickets are $45 each just for the coach but we need to fill the coach to make the trip viable.”

Mrs Rich said while it would be an early start to the day, the concert would be wonderful.

“It is an opportunity for local seniors to mingle with other seniors, it’s an opportunity to see the Sydney Entertainment Centre at its best and it gives them the opportunity to see world-renowned artists,” she said.

“You don’t have to be a member of the Senior Citizens Centre to go, all you need to do is ring me and put your name down.”

Other activities planned during the week include a bingo marathon on the Monday, a morning tea with entertainment at Bellhaven on the Tuesday, a trip to Taronga Western Plains Zoo on Wednesday, a coach trip to Bathurst to visit Abercrombie House and more on the Thursday and a morning tea at Stuart Town on the Friday where seniors will get the opportunity to question some of the district’s councillors.

A social euchre afternoon and afternoon tea at the library will also be held on the Friday.

The activities will culminate on Saturday March 27 with an old-time bush dance which will be held at the Wellington Soldiers’ Memorial Club.

Mrs Rich said the dance was aimed at both young

and old and encouraged families to pack a picnic and make it a great night out.

“The dance is an event we are putting on to give the older people in the community a chance to remember back when they used to go to balls and farm dances,” she said.

“It’s also a good chance to let the younger people see how the older people used to dance … there will be the Pride of Erin, waltzes as well as a bit of rock and roll in between for the younger ones.”

Tickets to the dance are $10 and are available at the Senior Citizens Centre or the Solders’ Memorial Club.

Seniors who have problems getting to any of the events are being urged to contact Mrs Rich on 6845 4355.
