The NSW Nature Conservation Council has demanded more action be taken on environmental issues in relation to Eastern Star Gas’ pipeline and coal seam gas development and is lobbying the federal and state governments.
The pipeline will run from Wellington from Narrabri. Their comments come in line with debate about the work being done in the Pilliga scrub
“They have failed to supply adequate detail of their environmental plans and adequate details on their plan for species, flora and fauna,” NSW Nature and Conservation Council chief executive Pepe Clarke said.
“More scrutiny needs to be done.”
Eastern Star Gas told the Wellington Times it had given the federal government four options for its pipeline route.
The plan also discussed environmental issues. They say the latest comments from the Nature Conservation Council were not unexpected.
“Coal seam gas production would clear at least 2400 hectares of native vegetation and threaten the future of nationally important wildlife such as the Pilliga Mouse and south eastern long-eared bat,” Mr Clarke said.
“The coal seam gas production plan even extends into the Pilliga East State Conservation Area, which is a protected area under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.
“A major gas production operation in the Pilliga will severely increase fire risks and real questions should be asked about it’s placement in such a fire-prone area. This latest application represents a massive increase from the proposal lodged last year.”
