Local men have pledged to grow a mo to show their support for raising awareness of prostate cancer and depression during ‘Movember’.
One in five men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and, for those aged over 50, it’s the most common form of cancer.
Community campaigner Brett Conn is organising a team to grow their moes to raise money for the annual event.
“It’s a great way to raise awareness of it,” he said.
“My father-in-law had prostate cancer.
“The cancer is well-known but not publicised enough.”
At the end of the month a ‘mo-down’ will be held with celebrity guests attending.
“I’m hoping to get NRL player Dan Conn down,” Mr Conn said.
“He played for Wellington in the juniors years ago. Hopefully he will bring some of his mates down too.”
Mr Conn is also asking businesses to get involved and challenge other businesses on who can produce the best mo.
“All progress can be tracked online,” he said.
“All the money is collected and I give receipts back for donations.”
Each year in Australia close to 3000 men die of prostate cancer with 982 deaths in NSW alone in 2006.
A national survey of mental health and wellbeing in 2007 found 5.2 per cent of men in NSW experienced depression in the previous 12 months.
“Prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer does women,” Mr Conn said.
“Depression is also a big issue and it needs recognition as well. We will have fun doing it (growing a mo) and raise awareness at the same time.”
Adam Melhuish and David Sears said they were also keen to let everyone know about the life-threatening illnesses by taking part in the Movember challenge.
“We hope people will become aware of this issue and encourage men to get their prostate checked,” they said.
Anyone interested, whether raising money or awareness, is asked to contact Brett Conn on 6845 1716 to join the team.
